CREATING NAVIGATION ROUTES FOR NUVI 500 or 550
The Nuvi 5x0 family (500, 550) is the lowest-priced Garmin suited for boat navigation. It is a multi-purpose GPS that can in addition be used for hiking and driving.
In order to create a
navigation route, two PC (or Mac) programs are used. Route is created in
HomePort, transferred to BaseCamp to make it intelligible for the Nuvi, then
transferred to Nuvi. It’s a straightforward if lengthy process.
This may be the only complete guide on the web.
This may be the only complete guide on the web.
Note that the Nuvi 5xx
can accommodate ONLY ONE map (chart) per SD card.
START HERE
·
Put the selected SD card with your chart in your
computer’s SD card slot. If it does not have one, buy an adapter which will fit
into one of the USB slots
·
Open HomePort on the computer and click on the
chart. You will start seeing detail when the scale is less than 10 miles (the
scale is shown in the bottom right corner) — use your mouse wheel to change the
scale if necessary.
CREATING
A ROUTE
This guide is
adapted from theboatgalley.com/route-planning-garmin-home-port.
The following is much easier with a mouse with a scroll wheel.
- Click
on the hand symbol in the toolbar
. Then use a combination of your mouse wheel to zoom in and out
and click and drag to reposition the map so that both the start and end points
of your trip are on the screen. It does not matter if you can see the exact
detail of the start and end points now. - At the top right of screen search for your starting point and right click on result
- Select “create Waypoint”
- Search again, this time for destination; right click on desired result
- Select “create Waypoint”
- In bottom-left window, select both waypoints then right-click: “create route using selected waypoints”
- You’ll have a straight pink line going from your approximate start to finish.
- FINE-TUNE
START & DESTINATION. Now zoom in on your starting point, using the mouse
wheel and dragging the map (using the Hand
) as needed. Click on “Move Point” (square + arrow
). Click on current start point and drag it
to the actual starting point, then release the mouse. Do the same for the
destination. - FINE-TUNE ITINERARY. Go back to the start area, and now click on “Insert” (pencil icon ). Click on the pink line, then click where the first waypoint (after the starting point) should be. Click, don’t try to drag. Keep going along your whole route.
- Use the Hand to move around as needed. If you need to move a waypoint, use Move Point and drag it to the correct position. There’s also an erase feature (looks like an eraser in the toolbar) — click it, then click on the waypoint you want to erase.
- Double and triple-check your route for hazards while zoomed in.
- As you hold your mouse over the route, a little box will appear with the route distance and a time estimate (this is only as accurate as your boat details that are entered in Utilities > Manage Boat Profiles in HomePort).
- You’ll notice that your route has a “name” that is created by HomePort. In the route list on the left side of the screen, you can right-click on the route and then click on rename, if you wish.
TRANSFER
ROUTE TO NUVI
HomePort is not able to transfer waypoints
or routes onto the nuvi 5x0. Waypoints and routes are created in HomePort and
then exported into a program called BaseCamp.
Then the data can be transferred to the nuvi 5x0 from BaseCamp, and is used
there to create the route.
